Most people ask a new groomer about price, timing, and maybe the haircut. Very few ask what shampoo they use. It's an easy question to skip, but it's one of the most revealing. Shampoo is the first thing that touches your dog's coat during a groom, and it quietly shapes everything that follows, from how soft the coat feels to how long that fresh, just-groomed look lasts.
Why shampoo is the foundation of a good groom
A great groom starts with a truly clean coat. When the coat is clean all the way down, it dries evenly, brushes out smoothly, and fluffs up the way it should during the blowout. Trimming is easier and more even, too, because clean hair lies naturally and doesn't clump together.
When the shampoo isn't doing its job, the groomer is working against the coat from the very first step. Even skilled hands can only do so much with a coat that isn't properly clean.
Three ways a shampoo can let your dog down
It doesn't clean well. Some shampoos simply don't lift dirt, oil, and odor the way they should. The coat might look fine when it's damp, but once it's dry it can feel slightly tacky or dull, and that "dog smell" tends to come back within days instead of weeks.
It leaves an oily residue behind. Some products coat the hair to make it look shiny right away. That film can leave the coat feeling heavy or greasy, weigh down fluffy coats, and hold onto dirt, so your dog looks less fresh, faster. A thorough rinse matters, but the product itself matters too.
It strips the coat's natural oils. On the other end of the spectrum, harsh shampoos can clean too aggressively. A dog's coat has natural oils that help keep it soft and healthy-looking. Strip them away, and the coat can feel dry, rough, or frizzy, and lose its natural shine.
The goal is a shampoo that does the hard part, cleaning thoroughly, without either of those trade-offs.
A low-quality shampoo usually isn't the only shortcut
Professional-grade shampoo costs more than the budget stuff, and it's one of the easiest places for a grooming business to trim costs without clients noticing. That's why the answer to "What shampoo do you use?" tells you more than you might expect. It's often a good indicator of how a groomer approaches everything else: the time they take, the care they put into drying and brushing out, and the standards they hold themselves to.
That doesn't mean every groomer who uses a different brand is doing a poor job. It just means a groomer who's thoughtful about quality will usually have a clear, confident answer.
What we use, and why
At Pawsh Pup Parlor, every bath uses Chris Christensen, a very high-quality professional dog shampoo. We chose it because it cleans thoroughly without stripping the coat's natural oils or leaving residue behind. In practice, that means coats come out genuinely clean, soft to the touch, and ready for a beautiful blowout and brush out.
It's also the start of everything else included in every groom: nail trimming and grinding, ear cleaning, teeth brushing and breath spray, paw and nose balm, finishing cologne, and a bandana. We'd rather start with the right foundation than try to make up for a so-so bath later.
How to ask your groomer (without it being awkward)
It's a completely normal question, and good groomers enjoy talking about their products. You might ask:
- "What shampoo do you use, and why did you choose it?"
- "Do you use the same shampoo for every dog?"
- "How do you make sure the coat is rinsed and dried thoroughly?"
A confident, specific answer is a great sign. A vague one is worth noting. And if you're comparing mobile groomers, pair this question with a request for current photos of the inside of their mobile grooming unit. We explain why in How to Pick the Groomer That's Right for You.
A note for baths at home
If you bathe your dog between grooms, the same ideas apply. Choose a shampoo made for dogs, brush out tangles before the bath, and rinse longer than you think you need to. A thorough rinse is one of the simplest ways to avoid residue. How often to bathe really depends on your dog's coat and lifestyle, which we'll dig into in an upcoming post.
